Gothic Labyrinth

Charlotte Dacre who published under the name Rosa Mathilda, is best known for her gothic novel Zofloya; or, The Moor, a Romance of the 15th century, which was strongly influenced by Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho, and the sensationalist school of Matthew 'Monk' Lewis (The Nun of Saint Omar is dedicated to Lewis).

Zofloya enraptured Shelley and influenced his gothic novels Zastrozzi and St. Irvyne; or the Rosicrucian: a Romance. Byron also thought highly of it, and it may also have influenced Maturin's works, particularily Melmoth the Wanderer.
