Thomas
Gray, author
of Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard,
was one of the so-called graveyard poets who influenced the settings of
the gothic novel. He was also a good friend of Horace
Walpole, with whom he toured the continent. Writing of the scenery
of the Grande Chartreuse he commented, not
a precipice, not a torrent, not a cliff, but is pregnant with religion
and poetry.
